Sidebar’s Top 10 Design Links of June 2016
Counting Down the Most Clicked Links
It can be hard to keep up with new design links every day on Sidebar, so I’ve decided to start a new series of monthly recaps. Here’s June.
10. Console.Frog
Have you ever lied in bed awake, wondering why console.log is so boring? console.frog is an easy way to spice up your development life. Its really that simple!
The fact that this link was the tenth most popular thing posted to Sidebar in June shows that sometimes, we just want a bit of silliness to distract us from all that usability testing, cross-browser debugging, and type setting.
9. The Material re-Design of Google Play That Will Blow Your Mind
You know you’ve landed on a gem of a design when you 1. click through UI screens from end-to-end, slower… and slower… 2. now you’re staring at each pixels 3. yep, you’re drooling.
Looks like someone attended the Buzzfeed School For Clickbaity Titles. Nevertheless, this is a pretty cool concept by Bohdan Kononets, as featured on the Uplabs blog. Nice job!
8. iOS 10 Human Interface Guidelines
The world’s most advanced mobile OS offers everything you need to design beautiful, engaging apps that radiate power and simplicity.
New iOS releases are always a big deal, and it’s always interesting to see how Apple chooses to introduce their new design patterns to designers. Also a good way to get a glimpse of what clients will be asking for 6 months from now.
7. This GIF Shows the Evolution of the Breaking News From Orlando
The GIF above shows how The Times’s treatment of the Orlando shooting evolved as we learned more and discovered the scope of the horror.
Orlando’s tragedy was beyond horrible, and deciding the best way to react to it was no easy task. And that’s even more true when you’re the New York Times.
6. jQuery 3.0 Final Released
We set out to create a slimmer, faster version of jQuery (with backwards compatibility in mind). We’ve removed all of the old IE workarounds and taken advantage of some of the more modern web APIs where it made sense.
I’m sure you can find web designers who have never used jQuery, but you’d have to look hard. It’s used by *insert ridiculously high percentage here* percent of all websites worldwide, and has been downloaded over eleventy gazillion times. Per day. So any new major version is a pretty big deal.
5. Pixel Art to CSS
I know I’m not the only one that still has fond memories of creating delicate pixel patterns. Believe it or not, back in the days 12 by 12 pixels was considered plenty big for an icon! This is a cool tool that lets you relive these glory days, and then export the result as pure CSS code.
4. Design Details: NeuBible for iOS
Visually, the app is one of the cleanest, most well-composed apps I’ve downloaded.
Design Details’ Brian Lovin takes a look at NeuBible for iOS, and provides an excellent case study in beautiful app design.
3. Introducing HyperDev
HyperDev is going to be the fastest way to bang out code and get it running on the internet. We want to eliminate 100% of the complicated administrative details around getting code up and running on a website.
A lot of the complexity around building web apps is actually all the things that aren’t coding: setup, deployment, scaling, etc. HyperDev aims to take care of all that for you with a nifty all-in-one web IDE.
2. Cartography Comparison: Google Maps & Apple Maps
In this series of essays, we’ll compare and contrast the cartographic designs of Google Maps and Apple Maps. We’ll take a look at what’s on each map and how each map is styled, and we’ll also try to uncover the biggest differences between the two.
Ever wondered what makes Google Maps and Apple Maps different? Well, wonder no more. This fascinating in-depth article highlights all the little details that set these two apps apart.
And finally, the number one most popular link of June is… *drum roll*
1. New Google Fonts
After years of a, shall we say, less-than-perfect layout, Google Fonts just released a brand new redesign. And I’m happy to say the Google Fonts UI is now just as awesome as the fonts it features. A well-deserved top spot for a major improvement!
